Dear Investor,
Let me tell you why I started StockIcebergâa story I hope you'll find both relatable and inspiring.
For My Son
One day, I discovered that one of my sons, a college-level student, had started investing âŹ200 in stocks. He didn't need this money to live. He didn't need it to pay rent. He didn't need it in the near term, and being young, he could afford the risk of losing the entire capital.
All the conditions were present for investing. Except one crucial detail: technically, he was buying stocks blindly. Perhaps he was reading recommendations, not knowing how they got picked in the first place. Some investors look at company fundamentals, others use technical analysis. I think it is best to mix both.
Assembling the Tools
With my data science background, I had spent years exploring financial analytics and time series. I had tested methods, explored theories, and developed approaches that worked. It was time to assemble all of this knowledge into one destinationânot just for my son, but for anyone seeking to make informed investment decisions and explore models without programming.
StockIceberg became that destination. A place where:
- Technical indicators meet machine learning optimization
- Backtesting reveals what worked (and what didn't) in the past
- Risk assessment goes beyond surface-level metrics
- Every strategy is transparent and explainable
- You control parameters and gauge the repercussions
- You have a playground to experiment and see the results
Evolution Through Innovation
These methods will evolve over time. I'm constantly adding new approaches and refining existing ones based on your feedback. Truth be told, I get a new idea almost every weekâwhether it's a better way to optimize parameters, a new risk metric, or an improved visualization technique.
The Reeves Strategy, for example, is an idea I had for testing momentum-based approaches, learning from failures, and refining what works. It's named after my name because it's personal, it's a strategy I trust with backtesting and the correct support levels. It's easy to understand: when historically this stock rose by x% how long did that rise last on average for a given time period. Let me look at entry and exits based on this information and would I do better than just holding the stock. Simple, easy to explore with data.
The Portfolio section is also a fundamental litmus test for your stocks. It is considered best practice to diversify investments to diminish risk and exposure. You will find tools to analyze your stocks from that perspective. I love this section because it shows how distributed your assets are, if they move together and what could be missing to diminish risk further.
There is also the Beat the Market section where you can compare a strategy against major market indexes. That's also another fundamental aspect of an investment strategy, beating the market. If you are doing better than the market, you really have found something great. I see very few tools online to test that out.
I think you will enjoy the Backtesting features. It's something missing from a lot of sites, the ability to explore whatif scenarios based on past data for a specific stock. You can start by testing simple Moving Average Crossovers, RSI Mean Reversion, Bollinger Bands thresholds, MACD and Buy and Hold. These sound complex to you? There is always an educational tab to explain the underlying principles under a method of analysis. You also control the key parameters. Backtest until you find a strategy that works for you and then save it to be alerted when key levels are attained.
Hopefully you are starting to see where I am going with this. I want the platform to be educational to provide both a playground to test out ideas and discover fundamentals. You cannot invest blindly.
A Word of Caution
Be careful with how you use these graphs, AI predictions, and machine learning models. While they inherently look mathematically sound, they all represent different ideas and are based on past data. Read the educational tabs, master and understand the parameters. Do not use any tool blindly, it would defeat the purpose! Seek professional advice from a broker or qualified professionals for all your investments.
The fundamental risk: The past is not a guarantee for the future. The major word of caution about any market is that, in general, no one controls them. They may go up, go down, or stay the same.
Despite all the science we can applyâand believe me, there's a lot of it hereâmarkets remain a wild beast driven by:
- Sentiment and psychology
- Market conditions and liquidity
- Economic cycles, interests, debt levels and policy changes
- Company fundamentals
- War and geopolitical events
- Natural disasters
- Rumors and social networks
- And yes, possible black swan events, bubbles, panic and crashes
Strategy Over Speculation
Nonetheless, I prefer my son to use a strategy with his money instead of treating it like gambling at a casino, that he checks the correlation of his assets so he does not duplicate his stocks. That's the philosophy behind StockIceberg, use knowledge to make a good choice or educated guess.
I hope you, in turn, will analyze beneath the surface and find a strategy of investment within this assembly of financial tools and indicators that best suits your style and risk level. The Iceberg Metaphor
The name "StockIceberg" comes from a fundamental truth about markets: most of what matters is hidden beneath the surface. Like an iceberg where 90% of its mass lies underwater, the stock market's most crucial signals remain invisible to conventional analysis.
Everyone sees the tipâprice movements, basic volume, simple indicators. But beneath the surface:
- Market microstructure reveals order flow dynamics
- Advanced technical signals show hidden divergences
- Statistical patterns identify regime changes
- Market sentiment influences momentum
- Fundamental undercurrents drive long-term trends
